KAMPALA, April 13 (AFP) - Four military officers of the UN Assistance Mission in Rwanda (UNAMIR) have fled their stations in Rwanda and crossed into Uganda fearing continued ethnic carnage in the central African nation, the official New Vision newspaper reported here on Wednesday.
The paper said that the officers, who included an Australian, named as Major Srax, and three Bangaldeshi military policemen -- Majors Anis, Mozibar and Sherif ul-Ulam -- sneaked into Uganda though Kyanika border post, about 500 kilometres (312 miles) southwest of here.
The panicking UN officers had communicated with the UN headquarters in New York for clearance to leave for their respective countries through the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, New Vision said.
The leader of the three, Major Srax, recounted their ordeal, saying they had "escaped from the jaws of death."
UNAMIR's headquarters, established at the Ugandan western town of Kabale in October 1993, had nobody to answer the phone, while the coordinator of UN activities in Uganda, Tedla Teshome, declined to comment on the fate of UNAMIR, saying he had not had any communication from the Kabale.
