BRUSSELS, April 10 (AFP) - Rwandan rebels and the Rwandan army Sunday signed a ceasefire agreement which appears to be holding, the commander of Belgian UN troops in the east African country said.
"The two sides agreed this morning on a ceasefire, and apart from sporadic shooting it seems to be holding," Colonel Luc Marchal said in the Rwandan capital Kigali in a live interview with Belgian television.
Marchal said the capital was calm Sunday, adding that "the intensity of the fighting in recent days has given the impression that it (the combat) is all over."
Earlier reports said around 4,000 rebels of the Rwandan Patriotic Front were advancing on Kigali after clashing with government forces Saturday north of the city.
More than 1,000 people have died in three days of ethnic bloodletting in the country, sparked by the deaths Wednesday of the presidents of Rwanda and neighbouring Burundi in a plane crash.
