KIGALI, Nov 18 (AFP) - Residents of two localities in north-west Rwanda reported Thursday that rebels of the Patriotic Front killed 40 civilians overnight at Nkumba and Kidaho.

A town councillor in Nkumba said his wife and three children were among the dead. He said the killers shot and stabbed people, or used hand-grenades.

Sources in two other communes in the same district of Ruhengeri, at Cyeru and Nyamugali, said rebels had attacked them too on Wednesday night. Nyamugali's mayor was wounded, the sources said.

The four townships are in a demilitarised zone where neither government troops nor rebel fighters are supposed to go, under a peace agreement reached in August.

The killings were reported a day after General Romeo Dallaire of Canada set up headquarters here in the capital for a U.N. Assistance Mission for Rwanda, which 375 Belgian troops were to join later Thursday.
