KIGALI, Aug 31 (AFP) - Faustin Twagiramungu, a 47-year-old businessman, has been elected president of the Republican Democratic Movement (MDR), the largest opposition party in Rwanda.
Rwandan interim Prime Minister Dismas Nsengiyaremye pulled out of the race at the last minute on Sunday, during the MDR's first convention, because of the responsibilities of his political post.
Emmanuel Gapyisi, an official at the United Nations Development Program, also withdrew his candidature to protect party unity.
Froduald Karamira, a businessman here, was elected vice president of the MDR.
