As part of Judge Valat's investigation into wiretapping by the Elysée anti-terrorism cell, defense secrecy was lifted on a wiretap on Paul Barril's telephone line made on February 25, 1993. This wiretapping was carried out by the Interministerial Control Group (GIC) at the request of the Minister of Defense on December 23, 1992. According to Paul Bouchet, Paul Barril was the source of the revelation of the Elysée wiretapping affair.
