DAR ES SALAAM, Oct 19 (AFP) - Rwandan government and rebel Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) may reach an agreement on power-sharing during transition to a democratic political system in the next couple of days, sources at ongoing peace talks said Monday.
The two sides are currently discussing the set up of a transitional national assembly and the allocation of cabinet posts in an interim administration, the two remaining bones of contention in the current round of negotiations.
"We see some light at the end of the tunnel ... it is likely that they will strike a deal by the middle of this week," said Tanzanian foreign affairs official Ami Mpungwe.
Already the two sides, meeting in the northern Tanzanian town of Arusha, have agreed on the role of the presidency in an interim administration, during which executive powers would be vested in a transitional cabinet headed by a prime minister, and the legislature.
Other major issues yet to be discussed include the integration of RPF forces into the Rwandan national army and the repatriation of thousands of Rwandan refugees now living in neighbouring countries.
