BRUSSELS, April 10 (Reuter) - Four Belgians have been killed in the
orgy of violence in Rwanda, caught in fighting between rebels and
government troops in the capital Kigali, a senior Belgian officer
serving with U.N. forces there said on Sunday.
To my knowledge, four Belgians have been killed,
Colonel Luc Marchal
told Belgian radio.
In addition, 10 Belgian soldiers serving as U.N. peacekeepers were
killed last week as they tried in vain to protect the Rwandan prime
minister.
Belgium was the colonial master of the tiny central African state until
1962. There is widespread resentment against Belgians, accused by many
of the majority Hutu tribe of siding with rebels from the minority
Tutsi.
But Marchal said the civilians who died had simply been caught in
combat zones.
