BRUSSELS, April 9 (AFP) - Soldiers massacred an unknown number of Rwandan people in the presence of foreigners at a Franciscan mission in northern Rwanda on Friday, a spokesman for the British charity Oxfam said here Saturday.
Oxfam spokesman Eric Todts said the massacre occurred at Kigufi near Gisenye after Oxfam officials, several other foreigners and Rwandan nationals sought refuge in the mission from fighting sweeping across the country.
Todts said the soldiers entered the mission and killed the Rwandans in the party while three foreign women, from England, the United States and the Netherlands, watched helplessly.
The incident follows the massacre of eight Rwandan priests, nine young women on a spiritual retreat, and another two Rwandans on Thursday at a Jesuit mission in Kigali.
In that incident, also, the Rwandans were separated from accompanying foreigners, taken away and slain.
Church officials in Kigali said Friday that another six priests and a nun had been killed in the northwest town of Nyundo.
