UNITED NATIONS, Oct 25 (AFP) - U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali has asked an aide, James Jonah, to travel to Burundi and report back on the situation there, a U.N. spokesman said.
Boutros-Ghali instructed Jonah, an assistant secretary general who heads the United Nation's political affairs department, to make contact with officials in Burundi, spokesman Joe Sills said.
Sills gave no dates for the trip or any other details.
The United Nations decided October 5 to establish a mission in neighboring Rwanda to supervise the political transition in that country. Thousands of refugees from Burundi have begun pouring into Rwanda.
Boutros-Ghali denounced the coup in Burundi. "This action is not in conformity with the objectives and principles of the U.N.," Sills said. He added, however, that any action was up to the Security Council.
