NAIROBI, Jan 7 (AFP) - At least twelve people were killed and 36 others wounded in a shooting incident in southern Rwanda, near the border with Burundi on Saturday, the UN Assistance Mission in Rwanda (UNAMIR) said.
It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the shooting which broke out three kilometres (two miles) east of the town of Remera, according to an UNAMIR statement received here.
UNAMIR's commander Major General Guy Tousignant ordered the deployment of a UN emergency medical and rescue team to the area after receiving reports of the shooting early Saturday.
Six seriously wounded people from the Runyonbyi refugee camp were evacuated to hospital in central Kigali, the Rwandan capital.
UNAMIR is investigating the incident, the statement added.
