KIGALI, June 18 (AFP) - Continued fighting in Rwanda in the past fortnight between rebels and government troops has driven more than 80,000 people from their homes, informed sources said here Thursday.
That meant 220,000 people had been displaced throughout Byumba administrative district in the northeast, they said.
Officials said the fighting had affected the localities of Kivuye, Cyumba and Kiyombe. The defence ministry said the latest death toll was 39 civilians killed by rebels of the Patriotic Front in Kiyombe and Kivuye.
Peace talks were held earlier this month in Brussels and Paris, and further negotiations are planned in neighbouring Tanzania next month.
