Operation Turquoise in Rwanda
Two vehicles on the same route; the French are on a reconnaissance mission, the Rwandan army on parade. There was no exchange between the two armies, just chance encounters. Often the Rwandan army provoked the crossing of paths with the French; worried by the presence of the foreign force in their country, they tried to enter into contact with members of specialty branch Unites Parachutistes Francaises. Most often, these attempts were in vain. The whole of this series of images takes place along the route between Gisenyi and Ruhengeri, in Rwanda. Rwandan forces, primarily Hutu, paraded the length of the route. French Special Forces, the Commandement des Operations Speciales (Special Operations Command, COS), having recently arrived via Zaire, were
tasked with reconnaissance in this same territory. Any encounters with the Rwandan forces were unintended.
