CAIRO, April 13 (Reuter) - Egypt, current chairman of the Organisation
of African Unity (OAU), said on Wednesday its embassy in Rwanda would
remain open for as long as possible.
Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said Egyptian authorities were in regular
contact with their diplomats in the Rwandan capital Kigali and that
they had not instructed diplomats there to come home.
Egypt is in contact with its embassy in Rwanda, until this morning. If
things worsen the embassy will close, but no instructions have been
issued to close the embassy so that it will be possible to follow
events there given that Egypt is head of the OAU,
Moussa told
reporters.
France and Belgium have closed their embassies in Kigali in the wake of
bloody tribal fighting.
The Rwandan cabinet and most foreign nationals have fled the central
African country, where thousands have been killed since the death last
week of President Juvenal Habyarimana.
Moussa said he called on Wednesday OAU secretary-general Salem Ahmed
Salem, who asked Moussa to bring up the situation in Rwanda with
Mubarak.
Salem said the OAU conflict resolution mechanism would meet in the
Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Thursday to discuss the bloody
situation in Rwanda, a member of the 52-member organisation.
