OTTAWA, April 10 (Reuter) - Canada plans to fly a military transport
plane back to Burundi's capital Bujumbura on Monday to evacuate over 60
Canadians who fled the bloody confict in Rwanda, a foreign ministry
official said.
The plane will pick up the Canadians, who fled Rwanda to Bujambura
along with other foreigners in a convoy of over 300 vehicles, said Gar
Pardy, the Foreign Ministry's director of consular affairs.
The Canadian plane had flown to Bujambura from Nairobi, Kenya, over the
weekend but returned to Nairobi before darkness fell Sunday with no
Canadian evacuees, Pardy said.
It was not known if any passengers from other countries were flown out
of Bujumbura in the Canadian plane, he said.
Some Canadians have been flown out of Rwanda and Bujumbura by
non-Canadian aircraft under an international rescue effort, he said.
About 200 Canadians were estimated to be in Rwanda when violence broke
out in the East African country several days ago. Burundi is adjacent
to Rwanda.
Bascially we've gotten out everyone that wanted to get out (of
Rwanda),
Pardy said. We're sorting everyone out in Bujumbura now, and
they will be flown out in the morning.
Rwanda was plunged into a bloody confict by its president's death in an
air crash last week.
