KIGALI, April 7 (Reuter) - Sporadic shooting erupted in the Rwandan
capital Kigali early on Thursday, hours after the presidents of Rwanda
and Burundi were killed in a rocket attack that destroyed their plane,
witnesses said.
The Rwandan government broadcast an appeal for calm, asking residents
to stay in their homes. It said security forces were ordered to restore
order.
The statement said Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, 57, and
Burundi President Cyprien Ntaryamira, 38, died along with two Burundi
ministers and five senior Rwandan officials. It said the plane's French
crew members were also killed but gave no figures.
Foreign Minister Jean Marie Ngendahayo told reporters that the deaths
of Habyarimana and Ntaryamira was no accident: What happened was an
assasination.
