BRUSSELS, April 7 (Reuter) - The death of the presidents of Rwanda and
Burundi, after a rocket attack on their plane, risks plunging the two
central African countries into turmoil, European Union Development
Commissioner Manuel Marin said on Thursday.
A Rwandan Defence Ministry statement said the plane was shot down (on
Wednesday) by unidentified elements in circumstances which are still
unclear.
If (the attack) is confirmed I believe the situation will become high
risk given the internal problems,
Marin told reporters.
Peace and reconciliation talks had been progressing in difficult
conditions,
he added.
Rwanda and Burundi have been ravaged by conflict between their Hutu
majorities and Tutsi minorities. Both dead presidents were Hutus.
