BRUSSELS, Feb 27 (AFP) - Rwanda has freed 5,871 prisoners under a
general amnesty, the Belgian foreign ministry said here on Thursday.
It gave no details about how many were political prisoners.
The previous day, Rwandan Justice Minister Mathieu Ngirumpatse, on a
visit here, said 30 to 50 political prisoners were among those
released. He said there were no longer any political prisoners in his
country.
He added that prisoners of war were excluded from that category. Many
Rwandans were jailed after Patriotic Front rebels launched an attack
from Uganda in October 1990.
